The campus at NUI Galway is to become the testbed for driverless cars, it was confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) when researchers from the Lero SFI Research Centre at the university signed an autonomous vehicles R&D partnership with Valeo, the major automotive supplier headquartered in Paris.

Claremorris native and author Elizabeth Reapy has won the €10,000 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature 2017 for her debut novel Red Dirt. Red Dirt was published in June 2016 by Head of Zeus. The story takes place in Australia, telling the tales of three young Irish migrants escaping the collapsing economy at home. Surrounded by cheap drink and drugs, they make dangerous and impulsive choices — finding themselves in unfathomable situations.

Visiting US College collaborates with GMIT Mayo on environmental project

A group of students and staff from James Madison University, Virginia, USA, are due to arrive in Mayo today, Friday June 9 to take part in a summer study programme in collaboration with Lifelong Learning at GMIT Mayo, UCC and Waterways Ireland. The US group of three faculty members and 14 students majoring in biology, theatre and communications, are researching the cultural and environmental impact of water on our lives. As part of their studies and research they will take part in field trips and excursions right across Mayo in collaboration with staff on GMIT Outdoor Education degree programmes and the Lifelong Learning Department.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny on Saturday, announced the creation of 20 new jobs and a €6 million investment in the Marine Institute's facility in Newport.  The 20 new positions will be based at the Marine Institute, Newport, where they will be engaged on a number of research projects funded from a secured pot of €6 million in research grants from a number of agencies including Science Foundation Ireland, Interreg, EU H2020/European Research Council, European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the British Research Council.

Mayo native Lisa Canny began showing a big interest in music from a very young age, teaching herself tunes on the piano, and she will be bringing her talents to Castlebar on Saturday February 25 as part of the Finbar Hoban Presents series.  Having noted her musical ability Lisa’s national school principal, Sean Nestor, presented a then five-year-old Lisa with a small banjo and encouraged her to take classes. Bernie and Holly Geraghty taught Lisa for 10 years, passing on to her a great understanding, love, and passion for traditional Irish music.
